KUALA LUMPUR, 22 APRIL 2026 – The Malaysian Society for Non-Destructive Testing (MSNT) recently made a special television appearance on Astro’s popular morning talk show, Borak SeeNI, to shed light on the often-overlooked but highly critical world of Non-Destructive Testing (NDT).

Represented by Wan Abdullah Wan Hamat (Vice President) and Dr. Ab Razak Hamzah (Board of Directors), the exclusive interview titled “Peluang Eksklusif Dunia ‘Oil & Gas'” provided the Malaysian public with a deep dive into the massive scope, lucrative career paths, and the gritty realities of the NDT profession.

More Than Just Oil & Gas
While the NDT industry is closely associated with the Oil and Gas sector, Dr. Ab Razak emphasized that its application extends far beyond that. From inspecting commercial aircraft engines in the aviation sector and ensuring the safety of nuclear power reactors, to examining massive maritime vessels and civil infrastructures like bridges and buildings, NDT is the ultimate gatekeeper of structural integrity and public safety across all heavy industries.

Furthermore, Wan Abdullah highlighted the massive lifecycle scope of NDT operations. NDT technicians are required at every stage of an engineering project: from early fabrication and manufacturing, to commissioning, active operation, and finally, decommissioning.

A Borderless Career Path
For students and young professionals considering this field, the career progression is clear and highly rewarding. The NDT career path is generally categorized into three levels:

  • Level 1: Assistant Operators (Executing standard inspections).
  • Level 2: Operators (Supervising, interpreting results, and signing off on reports).
  • Level 3: Management & Engineering (Developing procedures, managing facilities, and assuming full technical responsibility).

Most importantly, NDT certifications in Malaysia under the Department of Skills Development (JPK) and conforming to ISO 9712 standards are globally recognized. “This is a borderless career,” explained the representatives, noting that certified Malaysian NDT technicians are highly sought after worldwide, opening doors to work anywhere across the globe.

A Reality Check for the Youth
Despite the high income potential and stable career trajectory, Dr. Ab Razak offered a candid reality check for the younger generation. The NDT profession is not for the faint of heart. It demands immense mental and physical toughness. Technicians must be prepared to get their hands dirty, work grueling night shifts, operate in confined spaces, and handle heavy equipment in rugged, outdoor environments. It is a job that requires strong resilience, a solid work ethic, and an unwavering commitment to safety.

MSNT: Bridging the Industry Together
Wrapping up the interview, Wan Abdullah highlighted the core mission of MSNT. Operating as a non-profit organization run entirely by passionate, volunteer industry veterans, MSNT serves as the crucial bridge connecting NDT practitioners, government regulators, educational institutions, and the heavy industries. By fostering these relationships, MSNT continues to ensure that the NDT ecosystem in Malaysia remains robust, competent, and globally competitive.
